[3] This tiger population was estimated at fewer than 2,500 individuals by 2011. Since 2008, it is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List and is threatened by poaching , loss and fragmentation of habitat. None of the Tiger Conservation Landscapes within its range is considered large enough to support an effective population of more than 250 adult individuals. [1] India 's tiger population was estimated at 1,706–1,909 individuals in 2010. [4] By 2014, the population had reputedly increased to an estimated 2,226 individuals. [5] Around 440 tigers are estimated in Bangladesh , 163–253 tigers in Nepal and 103 tigers in Bhutan . [6] [7] [8] [9]

They are also found in parts of Nepal , Bhutan , Myanmar and southern Tibet . The Bengal tiger is the most numerous of the tiger sub-species. According to WWF there are about 2,000 Royal Bengal tigers in the wild today, including 1,411 in India, 450 in Bangladesh, 150 in Nepal, 100 in Bhutan, as well as a number in Myanmar and China. [2]

The Bengal Tiger , or Royal Bengal Tiger ( Panthera tigris tigris or Panthera tigris bengalensis ), is a subspecies of tiger primarily found in Bangladesh , India , and also Nepal , Pakistan , Bhutan , Myanmar and southern Tibet . [1] It has traditionally been considered the second largest subspecies after the Siberian tiger , but Northern Bengal Tigers are often larger than Siberian tigers. So far the heaviest Bengal tigers captured in Nepal for research have been heavier than recently captured Siberian tigers. [2] It is the most common tiger subspecies, living in a variety of habitats, including grasslands, subtropical and tropical rain forests, scrub forests, wet and dry deciduous forests, and mangroves. The Bengal subspecies P. tigris tigris is the national animal of Bangladesh , while at the species level the Tiger Panthera tigris is the national animal of India [3] .

It is the largest living member of the Felidae family. Its fur is orange-brown with black stripes. Male Bengal Tigers are up to 10 ft (3 m) long. Females are up to 9 ft (2.7 m) long. They hunt deer , pigs , antelopes , cattle , young elephants , and buffalo . The Bengal Tiger is now strictly protected.
